Book is fantastic

I am very happy that I ordered this book, I ran across in Heme Lab while doing internship. I ordered this edition as it has better reviews than newer edition?? I find it very understandable while providing enough detail....I also find that it is very logically set up. The author, B. Rodak introduces subjects as appropriate...and then lets the reader know that subject will be dealt with in later chapters. I used two other books in course work, one of which was way too involved,,,the other looked like an exercise in "copy and paste". I am using this book to prepare for ASCP exam....
Also..I like the case studies that she has at beginning of chapter, try and answer without reading chapter and then go back after the chapter...

mostly pathology not function

this book from a glance deals mostly with the pathology of the endocrine system, not a straight forward text covering the function of the system. The text font is painfully small as well. Not what I was looking for. The book is daunting and by going through it in a cursory way have decided not to waste my time. Furthermore Doctors today are pretty much incapable of curing acid reflux, so the fact that the authors (doctors) try and root out the cause of endocrine disease is dubious. If you want to feed a hypochondriac appetite this might be for you. Learn the vitamins and minerals, and you'll be all set.

I wish I would have had this book when I was going to school. This book not only defines virtually every medical term but elaborates on essential areas. The beginning of the book is a color atlas of all body systems. eg. Skeletal,GI, Cranial Nerves, Muscles ect. It is then organized as a Dictionary from A-Z. There are clear pictures to help elaborate on definitions and explanations. An example is in the area of Intercranial Pressure. Not only is it defined, it is also explained in detail including ICP monitoring devices and pictures for easy understanding. I have been a nurse for a long time and found this book to be a wonderful reference.... in all areas of nursing.... Everyone on the unit wants to borrow this book and many have already purchased it themselves.

This volume concludes McCarthy's Border Trilogy?the first two books being All the Pretty Horses, which won the National Book Award in 1992, and The Crossing, published to great acclaim in '94. Devoted McCarthy readers will know not to expect any neat or dramatic resolution in Cities of the Plain, for the author is more of a poet than a novelist, more interested in wedding language to experience in successive moments than in building and setting afloat some narrative ark. Cities, like the other books, takes place sometime shortly after WWII along the Texas-Mexico border. John Grady Cole, the young, horse-savvy wanderer from All the Pretty Horses, and Billy Parham, who traveled in search of stolen horses with his younger brother in The Crossing, are now cowhands working outside El Paso. John Grady falls in love with Magdalena, a teenage prostitute working in Juarez, Mexico; determined to marry her, he runs afoul of her pimp, Eduardo. That is basically the narrative. Along the way, McCarthy treats the reader to the most fabulous descriptions of sunrises, sunsets, the ways of horses and wild dogs, how to patch an inner tube. The cowboys engage in almost mythically worldly-wise, laconic dialogues that are models of concision and logic. Although there is less of it here than in the earlier books, McCarthy does include a few of his familiar seers, old men and blind men who speak in prophetic voices. Their words serve as earnest if cryptic instructions to the younger lads and seem to unburden the novelist of his vision of America and its love affair with free will. If a philosophy of life were to be extracted from these tales, it would seem to be that we are fated to be whatever we are, that what we think are choices are really not; that betrayals of the heart are always avenged; and that following one's heart is a guarantee of nothing. YA-The final book in a trilogy that began with All the Pretty Horses (1992) and continued with The Crossing (1994, both Knopf). John Grady Cole and Billy Parham still love the life of the cowboy, but by 1951 they recognize that this lifestyle is fast disappearing. They work on a ranch near the Mexican border that will eventually be taken over by the federal government for use by the military. On a trip south of the border, John Grady sees a beautiful young woman in a whorehouse and becomes obsessed with her. She has been in bondage since she was barely in her teens and suffers from epileptic seizures. Much of the novel follows his efforts to free her and take her back to New Mexico. His efforts are doomed, however, for her powerful pimp will not let her go, and the story ends in tragedy. Despite the serious and even depressing subject matter, the novel is both arresting and entertaining in its depiction of the southwest in all its sere beauty and its realistic look at ranch life and the characters who choose it.

A gorgeous ending to a timeless story

I usually read every night to my wife. We've gone through dozens of books together in our marriage, and several months ago, I read "All the Pretty Horses" to her. She loved it, and would not let me read her anything else until we had read McCarthy's entire trilogy. We just finished it.

This book, the third in that trilogy, has its shortcomings, but it is still one amazing piece of work.

In this book, John Grady Cole--the genius horsetrainer of "All the Pretty Horses"--and Billy Parham--the kindhearted nomad of "The Crossing"--come together as ranch hands on a New Mexico estancia. Both are older than they were in the previous books--Billy much older--but both are kindred spirits whose stories connect with and affect each another.

The book tends more heavily toward the lengthy philosophical monologues that appear only occasionally in the trilogy's earlier volumes, and the whole story at momemnts goes a little bit long if you've just read the two previous volumes right before.

However, the writing is gorgeous, and haunting. For example, in one passage, a dead calf's "ribcage lay with curved tines upturned on the gravel plain like some carnivorous plant brooding in the barren dawn." Yeah.

And the ending--the ending is amazing. It might not be quite what you expect or ask for, but it is thrilling in its perfectness, in its completess, in how true it feels.

It left me holding the book like a priceless religious relic, re-reading its back cover, flipping back through it to parts I had marked, reluctant and unwilling to let go of these characters or their world.

Cormac McCarthy is a literary genius. He has made the West tangible, taken its most ineffable qualities and turned them into words. He makes me homesick for the place I already live.

Do not start with this book, if you've never read his other works, but do work up to it. Do read it.

Great characters, and superb language usage

Great characters, and superb language usage. His use of detail to paint a compelling picture is phenomenal. It's worth reading just for those reasons. The setting, that is, the description of the land and its pathos, is right on the money. I know that from my own experience being raised on a farm/ranch in West Texas in the 1940's when there were still remnants of the times he depicted in the novel. I got in on the tail end of those times, or close enough to them to recognize the veracity of the portrayal. The only reason I don't give it a five is, the endless and pointless conversation between the protagonist and the traveler under the overpass at the end of the novel is. It's too long and becomes pretentious. But I'm sure many would disagree with that, and in fact, many would probably consider it a plus. Also: his method of writing dialogue without quotation marks takes some getting used to, but in the end doesn't distract too badly. In fact, I got to where I kinda liked it!

Loved this. Mr McCarthy writes so beautifully; he creates memorable characters and storylines that are totally engaging, and his descriptions of nature are breathtaking.
I wasn't troubled at all by the use of Spanish in the book; in many cases the meaning can be inferred by the context within the story, and for those other times, I simply had a translating website open, and got the meaning there. But I found it no inconvenience at all, because I loved the story and characters so.
I thought 'All the Pretty Horses' was a slightly better book, but I will say the emotional impact of the denouement of this work was, for me, stronger...it was devastating, but real. Highly recommended.

This is a new addition to the Pathologic Basis of Disease series of books. With an attractive purple and blue coloured cover and is 529 pages long. The book is divided into 20 chapters that are said to closely follow the second unit of the seventh edition of the ‘big Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease and the Basic Pathology textbooks. One may ask why an atlas is needed to compliment such a comprehensive predominantly undergraduate text. The author states in the preface that ‘the majority of students are ‘visual’ learners and readily take advantage of visual study material’ this book therefore is said to provide ‘even more examples of disease processes in a visual format’. The aim of the book is also to provide a greater clinicopathological correlation of disease processes by including photographs of patients, radiographs and gross anatomical specimens as well as the histology.

So, is this book needed or helpful and would I buy a copy? This book definitely complements the Pathologic Basis of Disease series. It provides some useful clinical and radiological images which serve as a good aide memoir when looking at the histology and learning about the disease processes. The Pathological Basis of Disease series of books are regarded by most histopathology trainees to be superior to other general pathology texts for undergraduates and junior histopathology trainees. It is not comprehensive enough to replace a pure histology text.

However, with the current paucipathology undergraduate medical curricula currently in fashion, this would be a good atlas to use with any general pathology textbook. I would even recommend to those pathologists who still bravely volunteer to give undergraduate tutorials to take this book along with them. I think that books like this definitely have a place in the problem based learning setting.

Not a good book for boards (USMLE Step 1) review

If you are in medical school it is hard to use this book and also read big or medium Robbins & do the review questions because of the time constraint. The big or medium robbins contains all the information you need to ace you pathology class & to get a good foundation in pathology. As for studying for the boards using big or little robbins is impractical because it is impossible to cover all 800 pages (medium robbins) or 14oo pages (big robbins) in the time period (1-2 months) set aside for studying for the boards. It is much better to use a review book (i.e. rapid review pathology) to study for the boards. I listened to the 1st comment on this book & bought the book but realized after using it that there are much better (& more efficient) ways to study for the boards. A Great Adjunct to "Big" Robbins & Cotran!

This new atlas has LOTS of additional photos of pathologic specimens (both gross and microscopic images, with many helpful radiologic correlations) not included in the 7th edition of Robbins & Cotran. The photos are of excellent quality, and follow along, chapter-for-chapter, with the text for ease of review. Key features are highlighted by use of focal symbols placed within the images to direct the reader to landmarks detailed within the corresponding captions. The captions are substantial, and reinforce important concepts by using many of the same key words and phrases found in the more detailed text, as well as including additional information to enhance understanding. One thing is certain: In the field of pathology, pictures always help! This atlas wasn't available when I took sophomore pathology in medical school, but I am glad to now have it as a companion to "Big" Robbins as part of general pathology practice and review. So why didn't I give it "5 stars", you ask? Because there is always room for improvement, and since this is R&C's first atlas, more reviews are needed for this and future editions before extoling perfection. Regardless, I think they're off to a good start!

Great pictures, but riddled with errors in its descriptions

This book has beautiful full color illustrations regarding the gross anatomy and histology of each organ and their associated changes with various disease processes. Plus, it follows the chapter outline of Robbins and Cotran's Pathologic Basis of Disease pretty faithfully. However is riddled with errors in a lot of image descriptions that render it unusable if you are going to only rely on this book as a reference. If your medical school used Robbin and Cotran's Pathologic Basis of Disease for its pathology/pathophysiology courses, it will help in solidifying visual concepts, but don't give too much credence with its descriptions. I wish the author would have corrected them instead of rushing this book to press. If a medical student can catch these errors, it would stand to reason that he would have seen them too.

This is an excellent, succinct, well organized, extremely well-written and very user friendly book. I would say it would be a useful resource text for Epidemiology and Public Health students (particularly Bachelors & Masters level)as well as practicing professionals.

best epi text for beginners

This is the best epi book for beginners that I have come across. It is written by one of the greatest epi-teachers. Leon Gordis has a great teaching style. The book essentially covers the topics we covered in class. I enjoyed reading this book when I was a student and now that I have students myself I recommend this text to them...they all love it. Worth the money.
