So far, I've used the CD more than studying from the book. It's nice because you can look at it anywhere. I've studied with it most between classes and at lunch. The material is well organized, and it's nice that you can focus on different topics. I would recommend this CD and book as a study tool.

Really dry and really well summarized, exactly what is needed for NAVLE. Love it! Can be used after graduation as starting point for topics that you forget, then go to Cote (Clinical Veterinary Advisor) for more detail, or Ettinger (Veterinary Internal Medicine) for super in depth information. Recommend all three books I mentioned.

I wish I had bought this book as a second year vet student, as it would have helped me in my courses! It is VERY WELL organized by topic, and is a great reference in my first 6 months out of vet school to look generalized topics up quickly! Highly recommend this book and CD!!!

Do not - I repeat - DO NOT...

I'll leave others to judge the writing of the book. I thought it was good, not great. What I WAS left with was the notion of the complete insanity of the Italian police and judicial systems.

Preston moved to Tuscany in the early 00's with his family to write and enjoy living abroad. Under the Tuscan Sun, and all that. While there, he learned about a series of killings that took place in and around Florence. They were all double homicides of couples parked in Lovers' Lanes in the hills near the city. One killing a year, usually during the summer months, beginning in the late 1960's and ending in the mid-1980's.

Preston and a newspaper reporter friend, Mario, teamed up to write a book about the killings. These murders had been investigated by various branches of the Florence police and the Italian government police and a whole bunch of suspects, ranging from village idiots to Sardinian bandits to physicians and pharmacists had been arrested and tried over the years for these murders. Most of those who were brought to trial were victims themselves, victims of the ineptness of the police system and feuds between branches of the Italian judicial system.

If lives hadn't been lost and ruined in the years since the murders began, the book would read as an amusing farce, reminiscent of an Inspector Clouseau movie.

This book is a must read (or listen to). It is about an actual previous trial in Italy that lasted several years, and will give the reader insight into the drama connected connected with the recent Amanda Knox that lasted years also.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Arts in Journalism (A.B.J.) from the University of Georgia, and a Master of Divinity (M.Div.), Master of Theology (Th.M) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He previously served at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary as Dean of Chapel and Assistant Professor of Expository Preaching and Apologetics, Staff Evangelist at Edgewater Baptist Church in New Orleans, and eight years as the Senior Pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, AL. David has written several books, Radical, Radical Together, Follow Me and most recently Counter Culture (to be released February 2015). He also has a radio program on Moody Radio, Radical with David Platt, that can be heard around the world and features past sermons and teaching from David’s ministry.

Great Book/Horrible Seller

Once I finally received the book,(it took almost a month) it's great. I was apprehensive about the copyright of 1994, but it provides all the fundemental information needed to study and learn for the registry exam. I would stay away from this seller. It took almost a month and several e-mails and additional money out of pocket to receive the purchase. Amazon was good and made it right with a refund of the additional out of pocket expense as soon as they found out about it. Bad xperience with this seller but impressive custommer service and response from Amazon!

Computed Tomography, physical principles, clinical applications and quality control

This book has a wealth of information on CT. It is intended for the serious, hard core CT tech or Doctor who would like to know the intricate in's and outs' of CT. There are many pages of equations used to derive the intricacies of the CT process. What this book is NOT is a good review text for the CT registry. The information is there, but it is extremely hard to find because the Index is limited in scope. For example, looking for "Pixel" in the index turns up nothing. "Voxel" likewise turns up nothing. I realize these are very basic terms, and any tech looking to take the registry should know these by heart, but it is indicative of the lack in the index. Other terms that one would like to brush up on are also not there. If I were to do it over again, I would not buy this book to review for the CT Registry. otto

CT Text Sheds Light on CT

Durick., MPA.,RT(R)(CT)(M) of the University of South Alabama and appeared in Radiologic Technology (March/April 2001): "The second edition of this book improves on the first. Now in paperback, it has more graphics and illustrations and is an excellent textbook for teaching as well as a helpful resource for individuals planning to take the Registry Exam in computed tomography. The author has expanded the text with updated and new information on spiral/helical CT, realtime CT fluoroscopy, virtual endoscopy and CT angiography. Mr Seeram presents the material in an organized sequence, beginning with the history of CT and continuing with information on CT physics, data acquisition, computers, image quality assurance, new information on ways CT is being used today, pediatric CT and protocols. The information flows well, building on itself with each chapter. After introducing information, Mr Seeram thoroughly discusses it in an understandable manner. In particular he does an excellent job of explaining difficult concepts sunc as back projection, volume scanning, the role of computers in CT, quality assurance and the physical principles of CT. The graphics and illustrations are self-explanatory and are used throughout the text to reiterate the difficult information discussed. The author is an excellent teacher in the area of CT and anyone can gain from his explanations. The first edition of this textbook is used in our advanced CT classes and has been an asset for these classes. The book is worth its cost, considering the information it provides. Its strengths are the easily understandable explanations of difficult information and the excellent graphics and illustrations which reinforce the information covered. The summary comparison of three different manufacturers' units at the back of the book helps readers understand the different terminology used by different manufacturers. I do not find any weaknesses, except possibly a little less information on basic computer components. I would recommend this as a course textbook and as a reference text for anyone taking the Registry exam."

Video lessons good - homework could use editing

I am a long-time follower of all 3 of these wonderful teachers. Kay Arthur comes on very strong with her focus on the necessity for personal holiness and maturity in time of persecution. Priscilla Shirer is true to form with her talks on a personal, experiential relationship with God. Beth Moore is also very good in her talks regarding spiritual discernment in a deceptive world. On style points Priscilla and Beth's talks were my favorites. Kay came across heavy-handed in the video. I think it might have been a different energy at the live event - with the video, there was no opportunity to prepare one's spirit for such a hard teaching. There were 2 women in my small group who were quite offended by her talk.

The one weakness is the daily homework. I do a lot of Precept studies and Kay's homework felt like busy-work although I appreciated the message in her homework. Kay is the only one of the three who wrote her own homework. Priscilla's homework was repetitive and often times the questions merely restated something stated a paragraph before. Beth Moore's homework was disappointing mainly because it was almost a phrase by phrase, story by story repeat of her video lessons. They could have accomplished so much more with this study by simply editing down the homework and writing some deeper discussion questions.

Great Study

I've had other Beth Moore and Priscilla Shirer studies I've liked better, but it was very good all the same. It was kind of nice having the variety of the three women. Each had their own style with their different appeals to different ladies in our group, and I thought it was kind of nice to have a mix of ethnicity in there, too. It actually introduced us to Priscilla Shirer. We really liked her and did her study "Discerning the Voice of God" which I would highly recommend.

Used to be a good reference text

I have used each edition of this book as a reference, but was so disappointed with the 5th edition that I returned it after 1 week. This was once the "go to" book for the rare and esoteric. No more. For example, there is nothing "uncommon" about the problems addressed in the chapters on trauma and acute care, herbal medications, or pregnancy. The chapter on congenital heart disease (CHD) focuses on pediatric patients, a common subject with books of its own. A chapter on the adult patient with palliated or corrected CHD would have been more useful.

The chapter on muscle diseases is very disappointing compared to the excellent one by Miller and Rosenbaum in the 4th edition. The chapter on hematologic disorders lumps impaired coagulation and prothrombotic disorders with diseases of platelets. A discussion of acute blood loss is duplicated here and in the chapter on trauma.

There are 2 significant omissions: no chapter on cancer patients or chemotherapeutic agents (hardly uncommon but outside the realm of most anesthesiologists), and no chapter on rheumatic diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis that affect multiple systems and have novel therapies.

The 5th edition is an unwelcome departure from the original concept of Katz and Kadis. Perhaps the 6th edition will capture the spirit of what was formerly an awesome reference text.

The 5th Edition- Best Yet
By J Bigg
Lee Fleisher, a national leader in anesthesiology, has continued the tradition of previous editions with this fine book. The comprehensive chapters stand by themselves as a thorough reference. Conversely, the summary tables and strategies for diagnosis and management give this edition great range for 'middle-of-the-night' suprises as well.

The book is made coherent by consistent chapter design. Authoratative and well-written, it belongs in every anesthesiologist's library.

Excellent Resource!

This text is great. The field of statistics can seem very overwhelming at first and I didn't know which book to choose to get started. This book lays it out perfectly. It not only presents all the formulas and calculations you will need, but also applies them to everyday examples in the field, and is very easy to understand from a beginner's level. I recommend this text to anyone who is interested in the application of statistics in the medical field; moreover, why we use statistics to make scientific conclusions in the first place.

User friendly and easy to understand

As a medical student who has been required to use many statistic textbooks, I found this biostatistic book to be particularly helpful. It was well organized and allowed me to find the necessary information quickly. I also appreciated the fact that concepts were explained in a concise way with numerous clinical examples. I recommend this book to any medical student who is looking for a user-friendly statistic textbook.

A must read for medical students and personnel broadly

From start to finish Dr. Dawson engages the reader in a practical easy read journey in what is a very or can be a very complex and relatively dry subject matter. The author uses excellent real life anecdotal (some medical some not) examples to help the reader visualize the concepts being conveyed. I think many people would be intimidated by the subject matter at first glance. However, this book provides the baseline statistical principles education in a easy to read, and yes even fun at times, way that is core to so many decisions and investments in the world of medicine that I believe it should be a mandatory read for anyone in the medical field broadly.

I'm a 58 yr. old surgeon, boarded in general & vascular surgery, just practice vascular surgery. I outlined this book in its entirety to prepare for my latest recert. in vascular, which was in Fall, '08. Our group practice of 3 vascular surgeons keeps it in the office as a ready reference.
Each chapter has separate expert authors, so they vary in style and readability, but overall it is highly readable and useful. I would recommend it be on the shelf for every practicing vascular surgeon. Jerry Svoboda, MD, FACS, Rochester, NY
