Pastor's premarriage counseling

I have used Gary's book since I first discovered it many years ago. Of all the materials that I have found helpful in marriage counseling this one is at the top. It's practical, down to earth, and applicable to daily life. I have every couple who is planning on getting married read it. However, the people who seem to get the most out of it are those who have been married for a while and have a few emotional bruises to prove it. Thanks for a great resource. Totally an eye opener...filled with tools to use everyday with every relationship. Things you thought you knew you actually didn't. Enlightening and fun. Use with a group or a select few. This is something that once learned is never forgotten but as with everything needs to be focused on and applied. Finally, a book discussing the merits of cosmetic skin care products based on scientific data has been published. The purpose of the various ingredients used in moisturizers, shampoo, botanicals, antioxidants, etc. is explained.

Clear analysis of the different strategies used to treat hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, increase collagen production, xerosis, etc., is presented. The authors are careful to be noncommittal in making specific recommendations.

All in all, I enjoyed the book and think that anyone with a cosmetic patient population would find reading it educational. It is quite informative compared to other books on the subject without bogging the reader down with bioengineering equations. I look forward to the next edition.

Simply the Best!

I wonder, why such great book remained without reviews all this time? It was published at 2008, and not reviewed yet! OK, let me begin.
I was a long time searching for some text book in such dificult radiology field as MSK radiology. I bought many books, including beginners' level The Requisites series MSK radiology, MSK MRI imaging and Stoller textbook... All them had their advnaces. After I purchased my first book from The Radiology Expert series (Abdominal Imaging), I was really impressed by the clear and sufficient way that these series provide radiology information and highend superb quality of the included images and illustrations! The template based provided information is impressive! Each disease, each certain abnormal condition is "chewed" and presented step by step in brilliant and clearly understandable manner. You can find not only brief information and tables of specific signs or disease, but deep "dig-in" data about almost all targeted field topics, organized in strict and easy to read charpters, with separate explanations for all imaging modalities (Conventional radiography, CT, MRI & Nuclear Imaging). Huge amount of images lets' the reader to perform provided information uptake with joy.
I highly recommend this book (such as all books of the Radiology Expert series) to all radiologists and end-year residents. These books " are must be" in Radiology Department libraries and will work as daily referrences. I want to thank the Authors and Saunders Elsevier company for such great job!

Best MSK book in a long time!

The intelligent mind simplifies, not obfuscates. As such, it is a pleasure to find a lot of intelligent worldwide radiologists working under the expert guidance of Thomas Pope to create a very readable radiology book with text that is short, concise, clear and organized under logical subheadings, superbly colored drawings, and excellent clearly labeled images. In the past there was an unfortunate pattern in some circles of writing about topics using far too many words so that one would either end up skimming the material or not reading it altogether because of the failure of the authors to better summarize the diseases being described. What you want when you read something is to be able to remember the important points, which is hard to do when those points are buried deep.

This two volume set focuses specifically on MSK imaging, with each chapter discussing a single topic, much like the recent change in medical education where the focus is on specific body systems or parts rather than memorizing vast amounts of detail about many different diseases and "hoping" that the details come back up from memory when considering differential diagnoses of a specific anatomical presentation. Happily, the format throughout this two volume set is uniform, with a relatively quick review of more common abnormalities, along with some more unusual disease processes included. The appendices include some information that you always wanted to know, but could never find, such as orthopedic devices.

In other words, you can actually sit down and have fun reading it, learning new things and/or enforcing/fine-tuning that which is already known! The editors are experts in the radiological literature of their own part of the world, as well as what makes it into the international literature, and have summarized this literature with teaching points that would have otherwise been an impossible task to obtain because you would have to read through all that literature to try to arrive at some specific "pearls" to take home. All of it is clinically relevant to the diseases that we see every day, and I am already using it as a quick reference. I highly recommend this book!

Try to read the account of the Israel going into the promised land from the WORD at the same time you read this book. It will add clarity and details. Best to read at a slower pace, not a race to the finish. The last chapter is the best, of course!

Book Review: One in a Million

Has something that you needed but did not ask for drop into your lap unexpectedly? This happened to me with Priscilla Shirer's new book, One in a Million: Journey to Your Promised Land. It is without a doubt one of those books that touches your inner fibers so profoundly that you will consider it a landmark in your spiritual journey. The kind that gives you goose bumps when you are reading it because you think it was written especially for you.

Shirer uses the biblical narrative of Exodus 1 to teach us that abundant life can be achieved in our daily living. Experiencing God's power in our lives every day and not just on Sundays is the crux of this book. The author invites us on a spiritual journey paralleling the Israelites own physical journey out of Egypt, through the wilderness and stationed at the threshold of the Promised Land. That is where the decision is made to become that one-in-a-million who enters the land.

The Promised Land is the place where we experience the fullness of what God has to offer us no matter what the cost to getting there is. It is an invitation to step into our inheritance and live the destiny God has ordained for us. It is also a call that requires courage and patience, as we leave our past behind and wait in the wilderness while trusting in God's sustenance. It will require determination to enter into a life of power, joy and peace.

Shirer's writing style is conversational yet clever and full of spiritual gems. The book is a perfect balance of expository teaching and personal anecdotes that bring bible truths to life. It is a must-read if what you truly desire and seek is to be one of the few who will not settle for less than a deeper and more intimate relationship with God.

Excellent Reference for Both Vet Professionals and Pet Owners

As a licensed veterinary technician this is probably the best book on pet allergies and skin diseases that I've read. It contains a lot of scientific information and jargon but isn't too over the top for pet owners that want the nitty-gritty details.

One thing I really like about this book is all the color photographs (including the ear mite close up--Eeww!) and diagrams which are used to illustrate the author's explanation. In many references books we are only given sketchy illustrations which can make learning more difficult and a lot less interesting. Although, you will really feel sorry for a lot of the pets in this book.

The fact that the author uses pictures from her own case studies is also very helpful. Despite the numerous colored photos the price of the book is still very affordable.

Unlike a lot of pet health books out there, the author of this book is not only a veterinarian but is also board certified in both dermatology and internal medicine. The author also includes a list of references for each chapter if you're a nerd like me and actually like to read the references! It's good to know that the information presented in this book is based both on the author's experiences and scientific research.

Skin problems are the most common condition for which pet owners seek veterinary assistance and this book covers everything from nose to tail. I recently checked it out from the library and renewed it 3 times before I had to take it back. As a freelance writer who often writes scientific articles for numerous pet publications I will be purchasing this title soon so I can add it to my permanent collection.

Buy this book! Excellent text for nursing pharmacology...

This is one of my favorite nursing texts. It is concise, organized, accurate, well-written, and up-to-date --unlike many of my other nursing texts (e.g., Kee's pharmacology). I actually enjoy reading it.

This is not a required text for me, but I would not do without it. I recommend it to anyone who wants to speed their understanding of pharmacology. --I have spent extra time pondering it as it has alerted me to errors in my required text(s). That's a good thing. I just wish those other texts weren't required and Lehne was. Best to learn the right data from the start.

Lehne uses tables to present complex information from various angles. This helps to better and rapidly digest things like drug categories, therapeutic results, etc.

Lehne uses more medical/scientific language and explanations compared to my other nursing texts. That's a plus to me, but others might not like it. My other books use simpler language (and/or definitions which clutter the writing and slow my reading) and omit background info (which I find helpful). I actually find Lehne simpler as he doesn't dance around the material. He just states it simply and directly and I get it. When the explanation is not there, as in my other texts, rote memorization is required. I am much better at remembering per an associated concept, so I like Lehne.

Finally, I have found Lehne to be markedly more up-to-date than my other texts. For instance, I have 2008 and 2009 texts that describe drugs that the FDA removed from the market more than a decade ago. Lehne had already updated his info in his 2001 edition (and of course the 2006 edition). I have not found the typographical errors or sloppy writing in Lehne that I have found in other texts. I think overall, Lehne has a better writing and editing team.

Truely outstanding pharmacology book

Lehne has done an excellent job at making a potentially dry subject interesting and, at times, captivating. He is very talented at giving the "why" behind how drugs work and why they have side effects. However, this is not a book for laypeople. For it to be a truly good read one should have a comfort level with human anatomy and physiology - at the very least. Previous pathophysiology coursework would be preferable.

The book is set up in a very logical way. Lehne provides a helpful review of A&P fundamentals for a particular body system and then presents the medications that affect that system. The chapters are relatively short (many less than ten pages) and easy to digest. The writing style is easy to read and not overly technical. Also, there is not an excessive use of abbreviations which makes reading the book more like, well, reading a book and less like reading a textbook.

Pharmacology was a tough subject for me to master, but this book makes it easier to comprehend. Since I graduated nursing school, I sold back most of my textbooks, but kept this one to use as a reference throughout my nursing career.

Chuck Lawless is professor and senior associate dean of the Billy Graham School of Missions, Evangelism and Church Growth at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
