In this latest novel from the author of Playing for the Ashes (Bantam, 1994), the kidnapping of a child wreaks havoc on the lives of her mother, a conservative British MP, and the child's secret father, the left-wing editor of an anti-Tory tabloid.Though the novel starts slowly, it is nevertheless riveting, and much of the action focuses on detective Barbara Havers, second to Scotland Yard's holier-than-thou-inspector Thomas Lynley, the series star. The denouement is rather abrupt and the motive mixup ludicrous, but George is still one of the best mystery writers around.

Queen of Plotting

I have read many of the Elizabeth George's novels - and they are novels rather than genre mysteries. It begins with excellent plotting, good character development, and good setting descriptions. She is one of the best in weaving multiple threads of plot, sub-plot, and sub-sub plot and finally distributing justice for all. In this story, a sleazy tabloid newspaper editor, a liberal, receives a note saying his firstborn has been kidnapped and will die if he doesn't publish the child's true identity. The child is being raised by its mother - a Tory Conservative in the British government. The child was the result of a wild, sex-filled weekend at a conference and there is no good feeling between mom and pop. Dad doesn't publish the story and the child dies. Characters are well drawn at the beginning and through the middle of the story. As the story plays out, I found the characters becoming stereotypes and the murderer becoming obvious. And Lynley's and Havers' roles never vary much from past books. In many sections, I found the prose to be "wordy" and accounting for Ms. George's long novels. I'll get back to Elizabeth George in the future but for now - I've had enough

Filled the time during the daily commute

A good yarn but getting a bit formulaic. The characters in this novel seemed to be a bit more colourful than usual. I still have trouble with the author's use of unnecessary vocabulary. For example "their concupiscence heightened by the fact that they were polar extremes" and "she hated to be a cynosure". I have a mental image of the author flicking through a Thesaurus to find those words most likely to interrupt the flow of the prose.

As a fan of Elizabeth George books I thought I had read them all so when I found this one I was expecting something good but what I got was so much more than good it was excellent.. From the beginning I could not put it down. Now that I have finished it I feel like searching for another one. This one will be hard to bet.
